CLUB HISTORY

The Eastern North Carolina Unit of WBCCI was started in 1973 when 28 families met at Holiday Travel Park in Lumberton for an organizational meeting.  With a donation of $300 from the Carolinas Unit, and Dan and Jessie Bland at the helm, we were off and running.

In 1974 Carolyn and David White brought the charter back to the club from the International Rally at Notre Dame.  They are the only active charter members at this time (2009).

The first club president was Dan Bland.  That was the year of the gas shortage.  The March rally was cancelled because of that shortage, but all the other rallies were held on schedule.  One of the best that year was held in August at Cherry Point Marine Corp Air Station.   In 1975 we had 130 families on our roll and Frank West was president.

Jumping ahead, 1986 was David White’s presidential year.  The next few years were busy ones.  We had a teen queen to represent the unit.  Hurricane Hugo blew away the state rally and we chose a name for our newletter via a contest:  The Itchy Hitch.

We’ve had our share of lady presidents.  First was Nina Guice in 1977.  In 1995 it was Susan King, Mary Tinga in 1996, Matilda Robinson in 1997, Margaret Phelps in 1998, Carolyn White in 1999, and Fay Sloan in 2000.

We shall never forget all those who were dear to us but who are no longer with us.  Their memory will live forever in our hearts.  We move forward as we were meant to do and we continue to travel - - to make new friends - - to form new bonds - - to see new places and experience new things - - because it is our way of life and we love it!!   As a club we have many wonderful memories and have shared many good times.  We ARE a family and care for each other!
